Changemaker of the Month: Ruth Karamoja
At Flourish, we are proud to celebrate individuals who see a need within their community and turn that insight into meaningful action.
This month, we’re delighted to spotlight Ruth Karamoja—a passionate community leader, social entrepreneur and changemaker whose work is rooted in culture, connection, inclusion and a deep commitment to helping others thrive.
Ruth accessed support through Flourish’s Time to Grow programme to evolve the organisation and Flourish were proud to attend a Re-Launch event in early 2026. Plus, Ruth and a colleague, have since gained a range of qualifications through our Careers in Holistic Health programme to be able to diversify her services at Know Africa to include more wellbeing services.
Ruth’s Journey
Kenyan-born Ruth, moved to the UK in 2007. After settling in Greater Manchester, she noticed a lack of visibility and recognition for the diverse African cultures represented within local communities. She also saw that many young people were growing up without a strong connection to their heritage.
In 2018, Ruth turned this observation into action and founded Know Africa https://www.knowafricafoundation.com/, a charity dedicated to supporting, empowering and celebrating the diverse African diaspora across Manchester and beyond.
What began with a desire to give African culture a stronger voice has grown into a much wider community support network. Through Know Africa, Ruth has created opportunities for people to celebrate and share their heritage through food, cooking, dance, music, workshops and cultural events, while also connecting people with practical support and services.
More Than Culture
For Ruth, celebrating culture is about much more than events. It is about identity, belonging, confidence and creating spaces where people feel seen and valued.
Know Africa has provided practical support within the community, including food provision, wellbeing activities and counselling services. Ruth also established a community fridge in Wythenshawe, helping local people access fresh, nutritious food while bringing people together through a community kitchen and food-skills activities.
Her work also extends internationally through Know Africa’s Kenyan branch, which supports women and girls with education, business and career development.
Recognition and Impact
Ruth’s commitment to community has received national recognition. She was awarded a Points of Light Award, recognising her outstanding contribution to her community through Know Africa. The award highlighted the charity’s support for local residents and the wider African cultural diaspora.
Ruth has spoken about her belief in the power of community and volunteerism—a philosophy that sits at the heart of her work.
Her journey is a reminder that changemaking often begins simply: noticing a need, believing something can be different, and having the courage to take the first step.
Ruth Tips for Aspiring Changemakers
- Start with what you see around you. Meaningful ideas often come from recognising a need within your own community.
- Celebrate identity and culture. Helping people feel seen, valued and connected can transform confidence and belonging.
- Build community, not just projects. Sustainable change grows through relationships, collaboration and trust.
Ruth’s story beautifully demonstrates how one person’s passion can become a platform for an entire community to flourish.
At Flourish, we are proud to celebrate Ruth and the continued impact of her work—creating spaces where people can connect, belong, be supported and thrive.
